Title holders Terengganu braced for tough time in rugby sevens

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champions Terengganu are braced for a strong challenge in the National Sevens Championships at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium in Kuala Terengganu from July 12-14.

The East Coast team are drawn in Group D with Armed Forces and Perak. Group A comprises Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Kedah, while Putrajaya, Police, Kelantan and Negri Sembilan are in Group B. Group C consists of Pahang, Sarawak and Perlis.

A total of 36 teams will compete in the men's and women's open, and boys and girls Under-21 categories. The tournament offers a prize money of RM33,000.

Terengganu team manager Aminudin Sulong said that they are geared up to retain the title.

"We have about eight national players and former national players to give a strong challenge in the tournament.

"We have played a few friendly matches. Teams like Putrajaya and Police will pose a threat to us," said Aminudin.

Meanwhile, the Agong's Cup will be played from Sept 7 to Oct 26. Police are the defending champions.
