Tunku Ismail: Teamwork, discipline vital for Harimau Malaya's Asian Cup push

KUALA LUMPUR: The Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, has urged Harimau Malaya to set their sights on qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

In the Asian Cup qualifying draw held today, Malaysia were placed in Group F with Vietnam, Laos and Nepal.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tunku Ismail, the owner of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), touched on the need for teamwork and tactical cohesion.

"A system and philosophy tailored to the strengths of our players is essential. We must defend and attack as one, maintaining discipline throughout. Insha'Allah, we can achieve our goal," said Tunku Ismail.

The former FA of Malaysia (FAM) president also highlighted the potential role of foreign players in Malaysia's campaign.

He proposed the naturalisation of JDT's Brazilian striker Bergson da Silva, who has spent over five years in Malaysia, as a short-term option.

Argentine-born winger Manuel Hidalgo was also suggested as a long-term addition to strengthen the national team.

"These strategic reinforcements, alongside our existing domestic talents, could make a significant impact," said Tunku Ismail.

He further revealed that the Harimau Malaya new coach and sporting director are already reviewing data on domestic Super League players and those competing abroad.

"It won't be an easy road, and it will take time, but we must begin now. We need to lay the groundwork for long-term development while also ensuring we focus on the present campaign," Tunku Ismail added.

Several names have been linked to the coaching role, including former JDT coach Esteban Solari, Peter Cklamovski and Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou.

Malaysia must top Group F to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup.
