MNCF expects riders to shine in President's Cup series, Asian Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill is expecting national riders to make full use of home ground advantage during the upcoming races at the National Velodrome in Nilai.

MNCF today (Jan 7) confirmed that Nilai will host the Asean Track GP President's Cup Series (one, two and three) on Jan 13-20 followed by the Asian Championships on Feb 21-27.

Amarjit said the four competitions will provide national riders a valuable opportunity to collect precious UCI ranking points on home soil.

He is confident Malaysia's top riders Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Izzah Izzati Asri will shine in front of their home fans.

"I am sure they all know their own velodrome very well and they will also have the support of the Malaysian fans," said Amarjit today.

"I hope they will collect as many UCI points as possible.

"I believe riders such as Shah and Izzah know what they have to do during the four meets. They are already world class riders and have a lot of experience racing at the international level.

"The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is still some time away, however, I hope they can begin this Olympic cycle on a positive note and maintain consistent performances."

Amarjit is expecting riders from Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and Iran to be strong in Nilai.

He added that the competitions will also help Malaysian riders prepare for the Thailand Sea Games in December.

"As we are all aware, track cycling will be included for the upcoming edition of the Sea Games," said Amarjit.

"I hope we can sweep all the medals in Bangkok. I know we can do it if we work hard towards achieving this goal."

Former world keirin champion Azizulhasni Awang, who turned 37 Dec 5, is unlikely to compete in the races at Nilai.

The two-time Olympic medallist is currently focusing on completing his studies.
