KUALA LUMPUR: The husband-wife team of Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai aim to break new ground in the India Open after reaching the quarter-finals today.
The professional mixed doubles duo's previous achievement was reaching the last eight in the 2018 edition.
The world No.4 beat Japan's Yuta Watanabe-Maya Taguchi 21-10 19-21, 21-16 in the second round
at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi.
But Soon Huat-Shevon admitted that they made it hard for themselves today.
Shevon conceded that her performance was average, and that they will have to raise their game if they are to succeed in the quarter-finals.
The husband-wife team will next take on either India's Ashith Surya-Amrutha Pramuthesh or Yang Po Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang of Taiwan for a place in the semi-finals.
"I think overall we did OK, but in the second game, I got a bit nervous and kind of rushed the game. Then I made a lot of unforced errors. My performance today was average," Ee Wei told the Badminton World Federation in a post-match interview.
"I kept rushing myself to do better, to be faster and stronger. That wasn't the game plan, that was not the tactics for this match, so I kind of messed up my momentum.
"We were leading the second game, I think 14-9, 14-10. The opponents caught up, and we got nervous and started rushing. From there we gave away a lot of easy points.
"The quarter-finals was the furthest we have been in the India Open, a step further will be an extra bonus for us," added Ee Wei.
Soon Huat said that they had a good start this year compared to last year, and hopes to continue their momentum.
"Now we are getting better, we just have to focus more, work on our mindset and endurance," said the 35-year-old.
