Jonassen: Jun Hao won't be treated as 'Golden Boy'

KUALA LUMPUR: Dane Kenneth Jonassen has vowed to treat all shuttlers equally, pledging there will be no favouritism as the national singles coach.

The 50-year-old stressed he will not focus solely on world No. 29 men's singles ace Leong Jun Hao, the highest-ranked Malaysian player in the national team, but will also help others make their mark on the World Tour.

Ng Tze Yong, Justin Hoh and Eogene Ewe are the other members in the national team.

For now, only Jun Hao has qualified for Super 1000 events based on his ranking.

However, he suffered an early exit at the ongoing Malaysia Open, losing 21-17, 16-21, 21-13 to China's Lu Guang Zu in the first round on Tuesday.

Jonassen is aware of the pressure each shuttler faces but remains committed to improving their game and consistency.

"Of course, the top players will get more attention. However, not all players fully understand the demands of modern badminton," said Jonassen.

"In today's game, a shuttler needs to be physically strong and capable of making the right decisions during matches."

The Danish coach revealed he is devising a new training programme for his shuttlers.

"There will be a new approach to improve the players' game intensity, tempo and decision-making," he added.

"However, changes like these take time. With my coaching experience, I am confident these adjustments will pay off in the long term."
