KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Eogene Ewe Eon is excited. The coach of his idol, Viktor Axelsen, is coming to Malaysia to train him and his national teammates.
Eogene is a big fan of Axelsen. And Kenneth Jonassen, who guided the Dane to the Tokyo Olympic gold in 2021, has just been unveiled as Malaysia's new national head singles coach.
World No. 103 Eogene said he was very happy when he heard that the former Denmark head coach would be joining BAM, and he can't wait to learn from Jonassen.
"I'm happy to see a European coach join our coaching staff, they have a different training. I did enquire about the training in Denmark, and he mentioned the discipline of the Danish players.
"So I think combining the European and Asian ways will help myself and the other players improve."
Eogene, 19, also mentioned that Jonassen wants him to improve on his footwork.
Upcoming women's singles player Siti Zulaikha also expressed her excitement over Jonassen's arrival.
"I hope I can learn a lot from coach Jonassen," she said.
BAM announced Jonassen as the new national singles head coach on Saturday and he will start work next January.
