KUALA LUMPUR: Although Ng Tze Yong is back in training following two back surgeries, the men's singles shuttler is not expected to return to the World Tour soon.
National coach K. Yogendran revealed that Tze Yong has only regained 30 per cent of his form and fitness since resuming training a month ago.
"It's too early for Tze Yong to compete," said Yogendran.
For context, the 24-year-old shuttler has been absent from competition since his last appearance at the Asia Team Championships in Shah Alam in February.
Ranked as high as world No. 14 in November last year, Tze Yong has now slipped to No. 68.
Yogendran stressed there is no urgency in rushing Tze Yong's comeback, citing that the athlete's long-term target is to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"Tze Yong is showing gradual improvement in training," said Yogendran.
"At this stage, he's only at 30 per cent of his previous condition. We want him to be mentally ready before he re-enters the World Tour."
He added: "The focus is on the 2028 Olympics. We don't want him to compete at half capacity and risk another injury."
According to Yogendran, Tze Yong's progress has been encouraging.
He is now capable of weight training and about 45 minutes of on-court practice daily.
"He's not back to full training yet. We want him to return at his own pace," he added.
"If he can reach about 60 per cent of his former level, mental resilience will aid his journey back to full fitness."
Only time will tell if he can be fit for the Malaysian Open in January.
