Bersatu rebel 6 should have quit - Hamzah

KOTA KINABALU: The six rogue Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Members of Parliament (MPs) should have quit the party, said its secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

The group, despite winning the general election under Bersatu, had declared their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim between October 2023 and January 2024.

The six MPs are Datuk Syed Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman, and Gua Musang's Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, who was also Nenggiri assemblyman.

In March, Bersatu amended its party constitution to automatically nullify the membership of any of the party's elected representatives who shift allegiance to rival parties.

Hamzah said it was just the beginning for them to cease being members.

He said the party had given instructions to all its elected lawmakers, but six of them had refused to comply.

Last month, the party has revoked the six MPs' membership.

"You don't want to accept the party's decision then you get out. You leave.

"And then, it is not the prerogative of the speaker to make that kind of decision. What do you mean, they want to support the other side but want to remain as party members?

"In the law, it is only (right) to ensure that the seat is empty," he told the media at a press conference at Sabah International Convention Centre here.

The Larut MP also said that the six rebels could fight him in court about the matter.
