Ex-Nenggiri rep Azizi to file injunction challenging Kelantan state assembly decision

KOTA BARU: Former Nenggiri assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim is expected to file an injunction to challenge the Kelantan State Assembly's decision to declare the seat vacant before this weekend.

His lawyer, Aswath Ramakrishnan, said he and his team were compiling the final documents.

"We will gather the final documents from our client (Azizi) and submit the application for the injunction online.

"Later, we will get the hearing date and inform the Press," he told the New Straits Times.

It was reported on Sunday that Azizi's lawyers had postponed their plan to file an application challenging the Kelantan State Assembly's decision.

He was originally scheduled to file the injunction at the Kota Baru High Court but the lawyers delayed it due to certain issues.

A spokesman at the court's central counter said the lawyers could submit the application at the counter or do it online.

Azizi recently announced plans to challenge Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah's declaration of the vacancy of the Nenggiri state seat.

On June 19, Amar declared the seat vacant following a notification of Azizi's termination received on June 13, paving the way for a potential by-election in Kelantan.

Following this, the Election Commission (EC) is set to hold a special meeting on June 28 to address the Nenggiri by-election.

EC Secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak confirmed receiving the official notification from the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly Speaker about the vacancy of the N.43 Nenggiri seat.

Nenggiri is one of the 45 state seats in Kelantan.

During the 15th General Election, Azizi contested the seat on a Pas-Bersatu ticket and won with a majority of 810 votes.

Azizi garnered 6,517 votes against Barisan Nasional's candidate Ab Aziz Yusoff, who received 5,707 votes.

The general election saw Pas win 43 out of the 45 seats, while Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan each won one seat.
