#NSTviral: Parents' RM50 incentive plan 'backfires' as daughter sweeps nine top awards in class

KUALA LUMPUR: What began as a simple reward plan turned into a delightful 'problem' for the parents of a student who swept nine top subject awards at school, leaving them slightly lighter in the wallet.

In a viral social media post, user @PittKF shared how their plan to reward RM50 for every subject in which their daughter excelled ended up costing more than expected.

The father, however, admitted it was the kind of problem any parent would be happy to have and expressed pride in his daughter's achievement.

"My wife is so confused right now. We promised our daughter RM50 for every subject she managed to be the best in class.

"At the excellence awards ceremony, we just found out he aced all nine subjects! Alhamdulillah, we're so grateful—though I'll admit, it's a good kind of problem to have," he wrote.

The post also included a picture of the certificate, showing his daughter's top performance in Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts, Physical Education, Music, Arabic, and Islamic Studies.

The story sparked a flood of congratulatory messages from netizens, who praised the girl's hard work and commended the parents for their encouragement, while also joking about the unexpected cost.

"Although it's overwhelming, I'm happy for you and your wife! A proud parent moment!" wrote @surayanor.

Another user added, "Good thing it was RM50 per subject. My dad used to offer RM100—but I didn't get it anyway"

"My mum promised to give me one K-pop album for each A I got in my PT3. I got 7 A's, but the albums are still nowhere to be found. It's been 8 years," wrote a user.

Some users jokingly suggested the parents renegotiate their terms for next year or prepare for a larger budget.

Despite the expense, the father ended his post with laughter, calling the experience both a proud and memorable one.
