KOTA KINABALU: While many shopping malls are dazzling with grandiose Christmas and year-end decorations, some have taken a simpler approach, showcasing a lone Christmas tree in their central spaces.
Over the past two days, two shopping malls in the state capital have been mocked in viral TikTok videos, with viewers questioning whether the minimalist decor reflected an intentional choice or budget constraints.
Centre Point Sabah Public Relations Executive Meredith Madani confirmed awareness of the viral posts.
"We know about it. It is just part of our marketing strategy. We set that (lone small tree) up on Wednesday.
"We will leave it there for a few days because this Saturday, we will have a big Christmas tree there," she told the NST.
The mall, in operation since 1971, is embracing the Christmas spirit with its Toys Factory-themed 2024 holiday celebration, transforming the space into a whimsical wonderland.
Activities include the Gift of Joy Drive, Upcycle Christmas: Craft-ree Contest, Toyland Tunes Show, and the Toyland Express: Meet Santa event from December 13 to 15 at 6pm on the 4th Floor, Palm Square.
Starting tomorrow, shoppers are encouraged to participate in the Gifts of Joy Donation Drive by donating new or gently used toys and books for children in need.
