KUALA LUMPUR: Durian, the king of all fruits that we have been accustomed to, has a hard skin with sharp thorns, but a recent viral video shows a different case.
In a social media video that had gone viral, a seller could be seen promoting a rare species of the king of fruits that had no thorns.
It was not clear what this special species of durian is called, but based on the TikTok video, the seller said the fruit originated from Melaka.
The bespectacled man, going by the username malaccadurianheng, was seen holding the fruit that looked like a small pumpkin with his bare hands.
He rubbed the smooth skin while saying: "it doesn't hurt no matter how you hold it".
After smelling the fruit, he tapped the "thornless" skin with a special knife before cutting it open, just like a normal thorny durian.
Inside, the yellow sticky flesh looked no different from the ordinary D24, Kampung, D101, blackthorn or even durian kahwin (mixed breed....).
This video had garnered more than 60,000 viewers and been shared by more than 5,000 netizens since it was uploaded on Wednesday.
The post also received more than 700 comments, with many saying it was the first time they saw such a durian.
Most commenters also said the fruit should not be called durian, but a buah "An" –- without the "duri", which means thorns in Malay.
There were some who called it "durian nangka", "lulian" and a few other names they made-up themselves.
.
There were also wisecracks from users like akrmznl, who wrote: "This durian botak (bald durian) tastes much better than musang king."
Another user named AidaNass asked: "What have you all done to it?"
