Leave it to courts to sort out addendum issue, MP tells lawyer

KUALA LUMPUR: A member of parliament has spoken against a senior lawyer's call to involve the Conference of Rulers in the addendum issue.

Pasir Gudang MP, Hassan Abdul Karim said the proposal by lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla could lead to a constitutional crisis.

Haniff had proposed that the Conference of Rulers convene to discuss the authorities' alleged refusal to admit the existence of an addendum order related to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim refuted claims that the government concealed the addendum signed by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Anwar said he had refrained from commenting on the matter before as it involved the royalty and explained that the letter from the previous Agong was delivered to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AG-C).

The AG-C then handed the letter back to Istana Negara after the new King was installed, he said.

In a statement today, Hassan said Haniff should not be quick to blame any party over the issue.

"Don't drag the country into a constitutional crisis. Let the courts sort it out."

Hassan said he was certain that when the addendum issue is heard in court, the AG would explain if the addendum had been raised in the Pardons Board meeting.

Previously, Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah revealed a letter from the Pahang Sultanate Council affirming the existence of the addendum order allowing his client to serve his remaining jail term under house arrest.

Najib is currently serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Subsequently, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and the legal affairs division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister's Department said they did not receive any addendum order on house arrest for Najib.

The BHEUU, which serves as the secretariat for the Pardons Board, said it was never informed or received any official instructions from the palace over the matter.
