Johor police: 467 booked for running red lights, 5 held for drink-driving

JOHOR BARU: Johor traffic police issued 467 summonses to motorists who ran red lights during a special operation between Jan 3 and 5.

The operation, conducted by the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department, also led to the detention of 20 motorists, including one woman.

Five were found driving under the influence, while the remaining 15 were caught street racing.

The suspected traffic violators, aged between 16 and 45, face potential fines of up to RM2,000 and a two-year driving license suspension for drink-driving.

Police also impounded 48 vehicles and issued 1,271 summonses for other traffic offences during the two-day operation.

Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar said the special operation aimed to educate motorists on the importance of obeying traffic light signals.

"Adhering to traffic signals is not just a legal obligation, but a critical measure to ensure the safety of all road users.

"Disregarding these signals can lead to severe accidents, endangering lives and causing unnecessary harm," he said in a statement yesterday.

He also encouraged the public to report traffic violations via the police hotline at 07-2212 999.
