Singapore PM receives official welcome in Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, on a two-day visit to Malaysia, received an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex today.

He arrived at 9.50am and was greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The two leaders are expected to discuss enhancing bilateral ties.

Also present to welcome Wong and his wife, Loo Tze Lui, were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Wong then inspected a guard of honour consisting of three officers and 102 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.

Wong's visit coincides with the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat, which begins today.

This is Wong's second visit to Malaysia since assuming office on May 15 last year. His first visit was on 11 June.

Wisma Putra said in a statement that during this visit, both sides are expected to review Malaysia-Singapore bilateral relations and discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Both leaders are also scheduled to witness the exchange of the joint agreement on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), six memoranda of understanding, and one letter of intent covering education, women and social welfare, climate change, carbon capture and storage, urban development, and combating transnational crimes.

Both countries remain each other's second-largest trading partners, with bilateral trade amounting to US$78.59 billion (RM360.12 billion) from January to November 2024, a 6.7 per cent increase over the same period in 2023.

This year also marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
