Policeman missing in canal attended 'reunion' with school friends

PASIR SALAK: The policeman who was swept away by strong currents while bathing in a canal at Changkat Lada, Kampung Gajah, here today, had attended a 'reunion' with his school friends.

It is understood that the 39-year-old corporal, who serves at the Melaka Tengah District Police Headquarters (IPD), met with several alumni from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Changkat Lada.

During the incident, the man was reportedly exhausted and tried to swim to the bank but was swept away by the strong currents.

Meanwhile, Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations division assistant director, Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, said 12 members of the Kampung Gajah and Teluk Intan Fire and Rescue Stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at 2.47pm.

"The firemen have conducted a search around the bank, while the water rescue team (PPDA) dived at the last known location of the victim.

"However, as of 7.30pm, there were no signs of the victim.

"A surface search will be conducted tonight, and a full operation will resume tomorrow, assisted by the K9 detection dog unit," he said.
