KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg revealed that a resolution for the gas distribution issue involving Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) will be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to TVS, he expressed confidence that the matter can now be considered resolved, pending the official announcement.
"This issue is not a real problem; it is merely a legal matter where Petronas relies on the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA), while we (Sarawak) rely on the Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958. It has been decided that the PDA and OMO can coexist," he said.
"However, many have exaggerated the issue, claiming that Petronas could lose RM100 billion in profits. Yes, there may be some reduction due to the gas distribution, but I believe this can be resolved.
"In fact, a solution is already apparent, but I cannot disclose it yet. Let the Prime Minister announce the resolution formula. It's done," he added.
He made these remarks during a recording of the TVS programme Temu Bual Khas Pasca-Belanjawan Sarawak 2025 today.
Abang Johari also confirmed that Sarawak's state-owned oil and gas company, Petros, will continue its collaboration with Petronas in the region's gas industry.
He explained that this partnership is essential as Petros and Petronas jointly dominate the gas reserves sector in Sarawak.
According to Abang Johari, this means that the benefits of natural resource exploration in Sarawak will be shared, and previous disputes were primarily related to legal aspects.
