Teen rescued from Kulai home, orphanage under welfare dept watch

KULAI: The 17-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and impregnated by the caretaker of a charity home here has been rescued, and the private orphanage is now under the watchful eye of the state Welfare Department.

Johor Women, Family and Community Development committee chairman Khairin-Nisa Ismail, who expressed dismay on the alleged report, said a thorough investigation was conducted on the home on Dec 5, after allegations of abuse and assault surfaced.

She reassured the public that all children residing at the private home were now safe and that it was under the supervision of the state Welfare Department, which is actively monitoring the residents, and situation.

"The suspect has been arrested by police. We are aware that there are further reports of the suspect allegedly assaulting children.

"We are working closely with the police…the investigation to get to the bottom of these allegations that are very serious are ongoing," she told the New Straits Times today.

Kharin-Nisa said the state government and relevant agencies were committed to ensuring that all care centres, particularly those housing children, are under continuous surveillance by the Welfare Department, which is constantly collaborating with the police.
