Agriculture ministry receives report from MyCC on rice and paddy issues

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Competition Commission's (MyCC) study on rice and paddy issues has been presented to the special committee and Agriculture and Food Security Ministry senior management.

Its deputy minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the report aimed to find a solution to the issue of the shortage of local white rice.

"We have received the report (from MyCC). MyCC has presented it to the senior management of the ministry. It has also been discussed (thoroughly)," he said.

He said this at a press conference after the official launch of the 2024 Malaysian Hybrid Beef Industry Potential Seminar, held at Parliament today.

However, Arthur said there was no timeline or specific date yet for when the report would be made public.

"No timeline has been set yet (for when the report will be revealed). The contents of the report cannot be disclosed until it is approved by the ministry.

"We will provide an official report in the near future," he said.

In July, the ministry confirmed that MyCC was conducting a study on the domestic paddy and rice industry, including the allegations of a cartel within the sector.

Last month, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said a special committee had been set up to address the local white rice shortage in the market.
