Dewan Rakyat to debate RCI report on Batu Puteh next week

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the issues surrounding the Pulau Batu Puteh sovereignty dispute will be debated in Parliament on Dec 12.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Ohman Said confirmed that the 217-page report distributed to members of parliament today will be subject to the day's Order of Business.

The report includes striking recommendations to initiate a criminal investigation against former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad following the decision to withdraw an appeal against the International Court of Justice's decision to award Batu Puteh to Singapore.

Specifically, the commission suggests investigating Mahathir under Section 415(b) of the Penal Code for cheating, with potential punishments outlined in Sections 417 and 418.

The final report was declassified and submitted by RCI chairman Tun Md Raus Sharif to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim on Aug 12.
