IPOH: The suspension of outdoor recreational and water sports activities in Kampar following the drowning of three Public Works Department (PWD) staff is the best step now, said an executive councillor.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said today that following the incident yesterday, discussions have begun with the authorities to formulate a new safety standard operating procedure (SOP).
Ng said the SOP aims to promote safe tourism for Gopeng's eco-tourism sector.
"I have started discussions with several parties to develop a safety SOP that operators can adopt and comply with for safe tourism.
"Additionally, collaboration with government agencies to improve water level monitoring or river warning systems will boost measures,."
Ng added that tourism operators she had spoken to understand the rationale behind suspending water sports and are willing to implement adjustments.
"I believe the authorities' decision to suspend water activities is essential and appropriate given the circumstances.
"For the development of Gopeng's eco-tourism sector, stakeholders should remain committed and supportive of plans to ensure safety."
Yesterday, Kampar district officer Nazrul Fazami Mohamad said recreational and outdoor water sports activities in river areas in Kampar district have been suspended.
Nazrul Fazami said that the directive applies to all resort and campsite operators.
Activities suspended include white-water rafting, kayaking, and water tubing, as well any activities involving river areas in Kampar.
Continuous rain yesterday caused the water level in Sungai Jahang to rise rapidly, which is believed to have overturned a rafting boat carrying six PWD members and one guide.
All passengers were swept away by the strong currents, and three victims drowned.
The victims are Mohamad Khairul Hakim Hamidi, 37, and Muhammad Ikram Abdul Bari, 29, both from Langkawi PWD, and a female victim, Suhaili Mat Saad, 47, was with Seberang Perai Tengah PWD.
