Police investigating viral altercation at Dataran Shah Alam

SHAH ALAM: Police are investigating an incident where a man was injured by several others during an altercation at Dataran Shah Alam, which recently went viral on social media.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said police received a report from the injured victim on Nov 11 regarding the assault.

"According to the victim's statement, he was sitting alone in his car when an unknown man approached and forcibly instructed him to leave the area. Unhappy with being asked to leave, the victim and the suspect engaged in an argument, which soon escalated into a physical fight," he said.

He added that in his report, the man claimed the suspect struck him first with his hand, and the victim retaliated in self-defense, before bystanders intervened to de-escalate the situation.

"As a result of the altercation, the victim sustained scratches on his right arm," he said.

A video of the incident has been circulating on WhatsApp groups and social media since then.

Iqbal said police have opened an investigation under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

He said that if convicted, the offender could face a prison sentence of up to one year, a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both.

He also urged any individuals with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

"Those who witnessed the incident or have details about those involved can contact Investigating Officer Insp Nor Idayu Abdul Aziz at 019-9459062," he said.
