SHAH ALAM: The federal government's performance will be a key factor determining party cooperation within the unity government in the next election.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said cooperation would naturally form for the upcoming election if everything goes well and the government functions effectively.
He said it was too early to discuss the next general election and that the ruling party should focus on administrative, development, and public issues.
"It has been two years of political stability, and the priority now is to harness this political strength and stability to build economic resilience.
"So, if we can establish a strong economy and govern the country well over the next three years, and everything goes smoothly, we hope this cooperation can continue after the election.
"However, it is too early to discuss the next election. For now, after two years, we need to focus more on administrative issues, development, and the people's concerns.
"That is our priority," he told reporters after the Selangor DAP convention.
Loke, who is also DAP secretary-general, said partnership between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional is progressing well, including in Selangor.
"In my experience in Negri Sembilan, collaboration at the state level has also been very positive.
"At the federal level, our cooperation is indeed very strong.
"The cabinet functions smoothly, not only with BN, but also with other parties like GPS and GRS, under Datuk Seri Anwar's administration," said Loke.
Earlier in his speech, Loke said the unity government would mark its two-year milestone, making it the longest-standing government since 2018.
He said the focus is on working together and progressing the economy, including on public issues.
In two to three years, if the rakyat feels that the country is on the right track, they would be confident that the current government can secure victory and retain their administration in Putrajaya, he said.
Loke cited the recent United States Presidential election, which saw the Republicans conquering the elections as the voters felt the government was not on the right track.
This, he said, must serve as a lesson for the unity government.
"The most important thing in politics and elections is to safeguard the welfare and well-being of the people.
"We are in government not to compete for political positions.
"Our duty as ministers, members of parliament, state assembly members, state executives, councillors, and village heads is to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the people and the nation," he said.
Meanwhile, Selangor DAP chief and Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said party members must not be complacent and must be prepared for the next election.
