Ministers discuss Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone framework in closed-door meeting

JOHOR BARU: The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) joint-agreement framework was discussed in a closed-door meeting between the nations' top ministers here today (Nov 7).

The Malaysia-Singapore Joint Ministerial Committee for Iskandar Malaysia (JMCIM) special meeting was co-chaired by Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Singapore's National Development Minister Desmond Lee. Present were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Singapore Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat.

"The JMCIM special meeting was convened to advance discussions on the JS-SEZ and its organisational structure to support long-term development and reinforce bilateral cooperation on key issues, including transportation and environmental sustainability," the Malaysia-Singapore joint-statement said.

The ministers also discussed the JS-SEZ joint agreement draft, which Malaysia and Singapore will ink during the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat in the first half of next year.

The JS-SEZ cross-border zone cooperation is anticipated to drive economic integration, streamline business operations and foster talent development between the nations.

JS-SEZ is envisioned as a dynamic zone fostering close economic cooperation between both nations with several initiatives to enhance cross-border business and streamline operations.

Among the key initiatives are establishing a one-stop business and investment centre in Johor and a passport-free QR code clearance system for faster, more convenient travel across the border.

There are also plans to digitise cargo clearance processes at land checkpoints, co-host investor forums to engage businesses on SEZ opportunities and promote Malaysia-Singapore collaboration on renewable energy.

The SEZ will also focus on curating targeted training to bridge talent and skill gaps, positioning the zone as a strategic destination for trade and investment through joint promotional events by Johor and Singapore.
