PM to inaugurate National AI Office in December [WATCH]

JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to inaugurate the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 12.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the office will help the government structure policies related to the AI sector.

He said NAIO will focus on four key areas: digital investment, innovation, policy and governance.

"NAIO will be launched on Dec 12 in Kuala Lumpur by the prime minister. We are looking at several aspects in its formation. The first is digital investment in the AI sector and the second is how we can ensure innovation is strengthened with AI.

"Third, we are examining the policy aspect from the government's perspective, specifically how policies will enhance AI's progress.

"Finally, we will assess governance, whether there is a need for laws in the AI domain," he said after the Data Centre Supply Chain Ecosystem Summit here.

The summit was officiated by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. Present were Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.

Gobind said following NAIO's launch, input regarding the AI industry's needs would be gathered.

"We need to prepare the country to advance towards AI. Once implemented, we will look at how these aspects can be balanced to bring benefits while considering associated risks."

Meanwhile, Gobind confirmed that the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) would open an office in the district next month, marking its second office outside the Klang Valley.

He said MDEC's office in the state aims to promote the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone in the global market.

"Many are aware of this initiative, but they want to understand it more deeply if they are interested in participating (investing).

"They need to know the process, making it easier for them to come to Johor and start their business."
