PM only acknowledged Najib's apology on 1MDB, says aide

KUALA LUMPUR: An aide to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has poured cold water on claims that the Prime Minister accepted Datuk Seri Najib Razak's apology for the 1MDB scandal.

"There is no question of the PM (Anwar) accepting or not accepting the apology," said Kamil Munim, who is Anwar's political secretary in the latter's capacity as Finance Minister.

"What PM said was that he welcomed the apology, and this does not in any way dismiss or alter the fact that the country has suffered significant damage due to the 1MDB scandal," he said in a post on X.

Kamil said any attempt to justify the misconduct linked to the 1MDB scandal has been nullified by Najib's apology.

"No one is above the law. Justice must be upheld," he said.

Yesterday, lawyer and former Malaysian AntI-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Latheefa Koya criticised Anwar for supposedly "accepting" Najib's apology.

This came after Anwar said he welcomed Najib's apology for the 1MDB scandal.

In a statement read by his son, Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib, on Thursday, Najib apologised for the 1MDB scandal but maintained his innocence in the scandal.

Najib claimed he was deceived by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho and his associates.
