PUTRAJAYA: Senior Citizens Activity Centres promote movement, well-being and keep older folk engaged, thus potentially reducing signs of dementia.
"The goal is to ensure that as we age, we transform into a society that thrives on productivity," said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
"We need to ensure that as individuals age, they have safe access to public spaces.
"We also need features such as handrails and accessibility aids," she told reporters after opening the National Conference on Ageing 2024 (NCA2024) today.
Nancy said that through such centres, senior citizens could participate in a variety of activities.
"Support can be provided of up to RM100,000, with an annual allowance of RM50,000 depending on the activities," she added.
The conference was organised by Universiti Putra Malaysia, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund to enhance research in the field of ageing for societal well-being.
The programme aims to foster collaboration and improve the welfare of the elderly through joint efforts between the government, researchers, and various stakeholders.
