KUALA LUMPUR: A Carbon Tax on the iron and steel industries, as well as the energy sector will be introduced by 2026.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move would promote the use of low-carbon technologies.
"Revenue generated from this tax will be used to fund green research and technology programmes," he said in the 2025 Budget in Parliament today.
He said a host of efforts are being carried out in the field of renewable energy, including investments to decarbonise industrial areas.
"UEM Lestra and TNB will invest RM16 billion to enhance the capacity of transmission and distribution networks and to decarbonise industrial areas," he said.
