KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign vehicles, that have yet to install the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP), can continue to enter Malaysia from Singapore as usual on Oct 1.
Road Transport Department director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli in a statement said those without a VEP, however, are encouraged to take action promptly.
"Singapore private vehicle owners who have not yet registered for the VEP RFID tag will receive reminders at entry points to register, install, and activate their tags immediately," he said.
He said the department would also issue warning notices to any Singapore private vehicle owners who leave Malaysia without a valid VEP, urging them to comply with the new regulations before their departure.
"As the enforcement date approaches, we emphasise the importance of obtaining the VEP to ensure a smooth entry and exit process at the border," he said, adding that the VEP enforcement will begin in phases starting Oct 1.
He said the department has designated several VEP installation centres where vehicle owners can complete this process.
The VEP installation centres are located at TCSens Office in Danga Bay; RTD Southern Region Academy; Johor RTD Headquarters and VEP Collection Centre in Woodlands.
Aedy Fadly said as of Sept 25, a total of 62,635 private vehicles from Singapore have successfully activated the RFID tag for the VEP.
He said the activation comes in preparation for the upcoming enforcement of VEP regulations at the Malaysia-Singapore land border.
Malaysia will enforce the VEP on all foreign vehicles entering from Singapore on Oct 1, in a bid to ensure all foreign vehicle owners comply with Malaysian road regulations.
Foreign vehicle owners who fail to comply with VEP regulations can be fined up to RM2,000 or jailed for up to six months.
