KOTA KINABALU: A cost correction is necessary to align the cost of producing and supplying electricity with current tariffs, said Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser.
In the tabling of 2024 Budget last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Federal Government would continue to support Sabah in strengthening its power supply industry through subsidies to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) until the successful implementation of the SESB Transformation Plan within seven years until 2030.
It was also reported that SESB is currently operating at a loss as it was purchasing power from independent power producers at a rate of 43 sen per unit, but selling it to consumers at 34 sen per unit, according to the tariff set by the Federal Government.
Nasser said that the state government was currently assessing the necessary steps for potential electricity tariff adjustments in Sabah.
Tariff is definitely something that we need to get approval from the state government, besides due diligence and assessment on when to do it.
There will be cost correction in terms of the cost of producing and supplying electricity versus the actual selling tariff to the consumer.
That will be based on further assessment, but it won't be implemented anytime soon, he said after launching the commissions two online applications at a hotel here today.
The two applications were the ECoS Energy Information System (EEISy) and Talk2ECoS.
EEISy is designed to facilitate the registration process as an ECoS Electrical Energy Manager (EREEM) and ECoS Energy Service Company (EESCO) for energy efficiency-related services.
Talk2ECOS is a feedback management platform that allows consumers to lodge complaints, inquiries and suggestions.
This system not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures the orderly management and easy access of data for all parties involved.
EESCO plays a vital role in the implementation of energy audits and providing consultancy services to commercial and industrial premises towards more efficient electrical energy management.
ECoS aims to register at least 10 EESCOs this year to provide effective services to nearly 70 premises requiring their services in the state of Sabah so far, Nasser said.
Present was ECoS chairman Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili.
