SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a key suspect believed to be involved in a syndicate bringing foreign nationals into the country through air entry points using the "Counter Setting" modus operandi.
According to sources referred by the Selangor MACC, the suspect was previously arrested by the Negeri Sembilan MACC last Wednesday and was remanded until Sept 23 2024 after an application was made at the Seremban Civil Court.
"The male suspect, in his 40s, is believed to be collaborating with syndicate agents to facilitate the entry of foreign nationals arriving via KLIA1 and KLIA2," the sources said.
"The suspect has now been brought to the Selangor MACC Office to assist in the ongoing investigation."
Confirming the arrest, Selangor MACC director Datuk Alias Salim said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
Alias added that the suspect would be taken to the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court tomorrow for a remand application.
Previously, the Immigration Department said they were taking action to reform work processes and service delivery, following reports of "counter setting" operations in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) involving department personnel.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said they acknowledged the weaknesses that had allowed syndicates to bring in foreign nationals using the "counter setting" modus operandi.
