PUTRAJAYA: The government has assured it will not implement its previous directive for all ISPs to redirect the Domain Name System (DNS).
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil however said he had requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to continue engagement sessions with all service providers to find the best way to address online security issues.
"The government's priority is to ensure the internet is safer for children and families.
"We are taking into account the increasing migration of crime to cyberspace, not only on social media but also within what we know as the World Wide Web (WWW)," he said at a press conference today.
The MCMC last month said it would take measures to ensure restrictions to harmful or prohibited websites remain in place by collaborating with service providers on several preventive measures, including managing DNS.
Following an uproar regarding the DNS redirection from experts and the public, MCMC was asked not to proceed with the directive.
Fahmi, who is also the unity government spokesperson, also said the government will not compromise on its priority and commitment to making the internet safer, especially for vulnerable groups.
"Therefore, more comprehensive efforts and measures must be sought, and I have asked MCMC to examine and find more effective solutions.
"Engagement sessions have already begun and will continue," he said.
