Promoting reading based on Madani philosophy

THE Madani Book Voucher initiative launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's administration on May 30 is part of a move to enhance Malaysia's intellectual and cultural landscape.

In building a knowledgeable society, the programme aims to provide young Malaysians — from primary school pupils to PhD candidates — with access to more books to develop their interest in reading.

It embodies the core principles of the Madani philosophy — intellectual, spiritual and material excellence.

Perbadanan Kota Buku chief executive officer Adibah Omar lauded the initiative, noting that it aligns with the company's mission to foster a culture of reading and to support the local book industry.

"The Madani Book Voucher initiative is more than just a financial aid programme. It represents a strategic investment in our nation's intellectual future," she said.

DIGITAL REVOLUTION

Adibah said the initiative features a significant advancement in book voucher distribution through Kota Buku Digital. This digital platform highlights the government's commitment to transparency and efficient resource use.

"By distributing vouchers digitally, we are not only ensuring that resources are used effectively, but also invigorating the book industry.

"The allocation of RM400 million in book vouchers saw the first voucher redeemed at 2pm on May 31 within a record-breaking 21 hours.

"This rapid deployment underscores the efficacy of the government's digital approach and dedication in achieving Madani standards," she said.

TECH ADVANCEMENTS

At the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (KLIBF) 2024, National Book Council of Malaysia director Mohd Khair Ngadiron emphasised the importance of digitalisation in the book industry.

"This technological evolution is not just about keeping pace with global trends, it's about positioning Malaysia as a leader in the international book market," he said.

Ngadiron also highlighted the industry's focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) titles, which are crucial in developing a skilled workforce.

He appealed to the prime minister to continue supporting book vouchers, saying the process is transparent and beneficial to the industry and readers.

MODEL FOR EXCELLENCE

Adibah said international recognition of Malaysia's book voucher initiative has further underscored its significance.

"At the Beijing International Book Fair in June, International Publishers Association president Karine Pansa praised Malaysia's book market as a truly inspiring industry, noting its robust local readership and active rights trading.

"The founding director of Lifetree Culture Promotion Centre, Zhang Mingzhou, also commended the Madani Book Voucher initiative as 'ground-breaking'," she said.

She emphasised the prime minister's commitment to promote reading among Malaysian youths, highlighting the rapid and effective deployment of the initiative as a benchmark in supporting young readers.

HOLISTIC APPROACH

Adibah added that the impact of the Madani Book Voucher initiative extends beyond literacy rates and has invigorated the entire book ecosystem.

With 797 sellers and 435,679 titles on the platform, the initiative supports authors, publishers, printers, illustrators and material suppliers alike.

"This comprehensive approach ensures equitable economic benefits and promotes a vibrant, resilient book industry," she said.

CULTURAL, ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY

As Malaysia celebrates its 50th year of diplomatic relations with China, the Madani Book Voucher initiative highlights the country's commitment to expand its cultural and economic influence.

"Through a strategic partnership, 200 curated Malaysian titles have gained access to 1,000 universities in China, showcasing Malaysia's rich literary heritage and creative authors to an international audience," said Adibah.

"The Madani Book Voucher Initiative epitomises Malaysia's dedication to intellectual, spiritual and material progress.

"By championing principles of good governance, transparency and digitalisation, Malaysia is not only nurturing a nation of readers but also propelling its book industry into a new era of growth and innovation.

"Perbadanan Kota Buku remains committed to this transformative vision, striving to build a society where reading is cherished, knowledge is accessible, and the Malaysian book industry flourishes on the global stage.

"The journey towards a literate and enlightened society begins with the simple act of reading, and with the Madani Book Voucher initiative, we are well on our way to achieving this noble goal," she said.
