KUALA LUMPUR: The presence of a Nissan Almera frequently parked in front of a secondary school in Cheras sparked fears on social media that the driver was out to abduct a student.
Police checks, however, later showed that the man was only waiting for his fiancee, who worked at a stall near the school.
Cheras police chief, Ravindar Singh Sarban Singh, said a WhatsApp message went viral yesterday over the issue.
"In that message, it was alleged that the driver was waiting to abduct any students walking alone or waiting for their parents.
"A picture of the car was attached to the message," he said.
He said the owner of the car, a 46-year-old man, lodged a report yesterday evening after the message went viral.
"In his report, the man said he was always in the area as he was waiting for his fiancee, who ran a stall in front of the school.
"He denied that he had any intention of abducting any student," he said in a statement today.
Ravindar said the driver has since met with the school management to clear the air.
"As such, we advise the people not to speculate or raise matters which could cause concern or disturb the peace," he said.
He said those with information on criminal activities can contact the Cheras police hotline at 03-92845050/5051, the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-21159999 or the nearest police station.
