No plans to review GDP forecast for now, says Rafizi

PUTRAJAYA: Any changes to or review of the Gross Domestic Product forecast will be included in the upcoming 2025 Budget, said Rafizi Ramli.

The Economy Minister, however, is not aware of any plans to review the GDP forecast.

"Not that I am aware of... so it has not been discussed yet.

"I think, after all, this is August. Whatever changes will be included in the (2025) budget.

"We should just wait for the 2025 budget. But as far as I know, the government is not reviewing any forecast," he told reporters briefly at today's launch of the Economic Census 2023.

He made this remarks when asked if the government would review the GDP forecast given better estimates for the second quarter of this year.

In March, Bank Negara Malaysia projected the country's economy to grow between 4 and 5 per cent in 2024, underpinned by continued domestic demand expansion and external demand improvement.

BNM said the possible growth would be driven by resilient domestic expenditure, with additional support from the expected export recovery.

On July 19, the Department of Statistics Malaysia forecasted that Malaysia's economy would grow by 5.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2024.

DOSM said the growth would be the highest recorded since the fourth quarter of 2022, which stood at 7.4 per cent.
