KUALA LUMPUR: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) hopes that lower-grade civil servants will take home at least RM2,000 with the upcoming salary increase.
Its president, Datuk Seri Adnan Mat, said this measure was necessary to ensure that this group can cope with the current high cost of living.
He added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to provide further details on the new salary implementation during the Majlis Amanat Perkhidmatan Awam (Mappa) on Aug 16.
"Cuepacs is confident that lowest-earning group (of civil servants) will get a take-home pay of at least RM2,000. This will provide them with some financial relief.
"The announcement by the prime minister in May also has considered various factors and has been discussed with the Director-General of Public Service and the Chief Secretary to the Government," he said at a press conference today.
On May 1, Anwar announced a more than 13 per cent increase in civil servants' remuneration, among the highest in Malaysia's history with the increase to take effect from Dec 1.
The last time the civil servants' salaries were revised was 12 years ago, and the highest increase in the past was at 13 per cent.
Adnan added that Cuepacs recently completed detailed discussions on the new civil servants' remuneration system.
