MACHANG: The state police have made all necessary preparations for the Nenggiri by-election on Aug 17.
State police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said he would hold a meeting with the Gua Musang district officer to discuss the by-election's process.
"State police officers are on standby and are ready to be mobilised to the constituency starting from the nomination day to the polling day.
"l will hold a meeting with the district officer soon to ensure the smooth process of the by-election," he told reporters after officiating at the launch of a housing complex for the state's Women Peace Police Squad (Amanita) here today.
In the meeting, he said they would discuss, among others, the number of police officers, who would be deployed to Nenggiri.
He said police would monitor the campaigns by all political parties involved in the by-election.
The Election Commission (EC) had fixed Aug 17 for the by-election.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the nomination of candidates for the state seat by-election would be held on Aug 3, while early voting is set for Aug 13.
The by-election is being held after its incumbent, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, was sacked from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), which is part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, after he declared his support for the unity government last year.
During the Kelantan state election in August last year, PN, through Azizi, wrested control of the seat from the Barisan Nasional coalition after he obtained a majority of 810 votes.
Azizi polled 6,517 votes to defeat Ab Aziz Yusoff of BN, who received, 5,707 votes, in a straight fight at the state seat.
