KUANTAN: Good news for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers! UMPSA Advanced, a subsidiary fully owned by Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), now provides an alternative education pathway to pursue their academic dreams.
All this while, SPM leavers have been relying on the University Admission Unit (UPU) system to apply for spots at public universities across the country. However, now the Public University Private Wing (PUPW) meets the demand in the higher education field by offering more flexible admission criteria and a wider range of programmes.
Private wings have their own separate application procedures. The tuition fees are different and not subsidised by the government, unlike traditional public universities, which benefit from substantial government funding.
The alternative pathway through the PUPW offered by UMPSA Advanced allows students to enrol in either science and technology foundation programmes or secure a seat to pursue their diploma through direct intake.
UMPSA Advanced chief executive officer Dr Ahmad Johari Mohamad said the diploma programme offers students an opportunity to continue with their degree through a direct entry system at UMPSA, which is among the top-ranked Malaysian technical universities in the country.
"Those in the one-year foundation programme can continue with a dual degree programme, completing a year at UMPSA and the remaining years abroad, depending on the programme, at universities in South Korea, Kazakhstan, Germany and China.
Currently open for applications, those who wish to pursue their degree can apply through the private wing at UMPSA Advanced for courses offered at both the Gambang and Pekan campuses for the July 2024 intake.
"Student intake by UMPSA Advanced will be based on merit, where students can enjoy the facilities across the campus, take part in university activities, and will almost be guaranteed the courses for which they apply," he said, adding that all applications will be processed on-campus.
UMPSA, established as a technical university in 2002, offers technical programmes based on engineering and technology, focusing on high-end Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and artificial intelligence.
It not only ensures access to top-class education at the university, ranked 146th globally, but also assures job security with 97.3 per cent of graduates finding employment after graduation.
Ahmad Johari said students could also enrol in additional competency programmes offered on campus if they enrol through this intake, such as scuba diving, golf, or other professional certificates, including drone operation.
"These programmes are introduced as an added value for students to gain exposure not only through the academic perspective but also to equip themselves with extra skills at no additional cost."
He urged SPM leavers to explore and take advantage of the PUPW at UMPSA Advanced as it will significantly chart their academic and professional future.
