KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Chemistry Malaysia (Kimia) deputy director-general (operations) Marhayani Md Saad has been appointed as the department's new director-general effective today.
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) announced in a statement today that Marhayani, 55, replaced Halimah Abdul Rahim who retired on June 1.
Starting her service as a civil servant in September 1993, Kedah-born Marhayani holds a Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) from Humboldt State University, California, United States and has extensive experience in the fields of administration, forensics, health and environment, halal and chemical safety.
Marhayani previously held the position Kedah Kimia director as well as senior director of the Industry and Customs Tariff Analysis Centre before being appointed deputy director-general (operations) of Kimia Malaysia on Nov 15 2023.
In addition, she also led the project of Strengthening Laboratory Services Through the Creation of Mobile Lab Facilities and the Chemical Disaster Response Team.
"Through this project, the preparedness of Kimia Malaysia in particular and the country in general can be improved especially in dealing with disasters and terrorist threats involving chemicals.
"Hopefully, with her expertise and extensive experience, she will continue to drive excellence and give a new injection to Kimia Malaysia which has provided the best service in the scientific field to the country for 115 years," according to the statement. — BERNAMA
