TEMERLOH: A senior citizen who failed to return home yesterday was found drowned in Sungai Semantan near Mentakab here today.
The remains of the 70-year-old victim were found by the search-and-rescue (SAR) team about 12.15pm today.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Hassan said the victim's 48-year-old nephew informed police that he last saw his uncle leaving their house about 12.30pm yesterday.
"About 7.30pm, a neighbour had informed the nephew that his uncle's wallet and handphone were found at a temple not far from the river in Batu 1 Jalan Karak in Mentakab. The victim's slippers were found at the riverbank," he said.
"The nephew alerted police before SAR operations were activated to locate the missing person. The victim's body was spotted floating about 50m from the riverbank about 12.15pm today."
He said the remains were taken to Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital here for post-mortem.
Mazlan said police will wait for the autopsy report to establish if there was any foul play involved.
