MBPP cracks down on unlicensed Penang businesses, eateries

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) issued 10 compound notices to business and eatery premises in the southwest district yesterday for operating without valid licences and other offences.

The cases, MBPP said, came to light after a team from the Trade, Industry and Food Establishment Unit and the Municipal Services Unit conducted checks on four premises.

During the operation, all the premises were found to be operating without valid licences by the city council and were issued with compounds.

"A convenience store, selling frozen food items, was found to be putting their food and drinks directly on the floor.

"Two eateries had failed to manage their grease trap well by allowing food waste to flow directly into the drain," the council said.

Besides checks on licences, MBPP said their operation was also focused on hygiene, especially the management of good waste.

"What we found were premises that failed to maintain the required hygiene and sanitation standards. Workers in the premises also failed to produce their anti-typhoid jab cards.

"Premises also placed tables abd chairs in public areas, creating hindrance and disturbances.

"As such, we issued a total of 10 compounds for the various offences committed," it added.

MBPP said investigations revealed all the premises were owned by locals which employed foreigners to work.
