Seven deaths from dengue in Selangor

SHAH ALAM: Selangor recorded seven deaths from dengue until Saturday during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period which has been in force since March 18.

The Standing Committee on Health chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said that during the MCO period from the epidemic week 12 (March 22) to the epidemic week 15 (April 12), a total of 1,910 dengue cases were recorded.

This compared to the same period last year which recorded 3,321 cases, a decrease of 42 per cent but registered seven deaths throughout the MCO period until Saturday.

“On the whole, from January to April 12 (epidemic week 15) there were 22,180 dengue cases accompanied by 23 fatalities but last year there were 23,323 recorded dengue cases with only 19 deaths.

“This shows dengue case reduction by 4.9 per cent, however the number of fatalities has seen an increase by 21.05 per cent,” she said in a statement here today.

Dr Siti Mariah said the location with the highest recorded of dengue outbreak from January to April 12were Petaling with 7,372 cases; Klang (4,582) and Hulu Langat (3,709).

“The locality with the lowest outbreak is Sabak Bernam with a mere 69 cases until the 15th epidemic week.

“During the whole of the MCO period which began on the 12th epidemic week (March 22) until the 15th epidemic week (April 12) saw the highest number of dengue cases being registered and stands at 1,910 cases.

"Compared to the same epidemic week last year which registered 3,321 cases which was a reduction by 42 per cent. The number of deaths recorded during the MCO period stands at seven deaths,” she said.

Dr Mariah said the state government through the Health Standing Committee had allocated RM5 million in funds compared to RM3 million last year to curb the dengue epidemic.

“Following the MCO being extended until the end of April and with most of the health resources at the state and at the federal level being utilised to combat the Covid-19, dengue control activities have been limited to non-contact activities in the outbreak and hotspot areas.

"Therefore, I urge all the people of Selangor especially those in the dengue hotspots to take appropriate precautions so that we can work together to ensure that they will not become more severe," she said.
