PUTRAJAYA: The multi-tiered levy mechanism (MTLM) is expected to be implemented in January, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim today.
He said some details need to be scrutinised by the ministry, Economy Ministry and related ministries before the mechanism was finalised.
"The details include the threshold value and formula for the levy of various levels before it is presented to a cabinet meeting."
Present was Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He said the MTLM was discussed at a joint committee meeting between the Home Ministry and Human Resource Ministry on the management of foreign workers.
He said the MLTM was presented at the May 6 National Economic Action Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The MTLM is a component of the 12th Malaysia Plan, aimed at reducing foreign worker dependency to below 15 per cent.
The foreign worker levy is RM640 per person for the plantation and agricultural sectors, while the manufacturing, services, mining and construction sectors pay a levy of RM1,850 per foreign worker.
