LIPIS: Police discovered human trafficking activities and arrested nine undocumented Myanmar nationals during roadblocks here yesterday.
The migrants, including a 12-year-old girl, were detained about 4pm when they were travelling in two vehicles driven by Malaysians.
Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said as part of Op Pencegahan Jenayah Bersepadu, roadblocks were set up at several main roads in the district.
"In the first incident, officers manning a roadblock in Jalan Lipis-Merapoh, near Padang Tengku, flagged down a Nissan Navara driven by a 25-year-old man with five passengers.
"After questioning the front and rear passengers, police found that none of the Myanmar nationals had valid travel documents.
"At the Lingkaran Tengah Utama Expressway, near the Aur Gading junction, officers spotted a Honda Accord that stopped at the road shoulder.
"Officers found four passengers in the car, two are female.
"None of the four Myanmar nationals had valid travel documents. They were detained along with the 49-year-old driver," he said today.
Ismail said the migrants were believed to have been smuggled into the country by different human trafficking syndicates and were likely heading to Kuala Lumpur.
He said the 11 suspects, including the Malaysian drivers, were taken to the Lipis police station.
The case is being investigated under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering the country illegally.
Ismail said 29 summonses were issued for traffic offences yesterday and such operations would be held regularly.
