JOHOR BARU: A 36-year-old woman lost over RM500,000 to a non-existent investment scheme, marking the latest scam case in the city.
Johor Baru Utara police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh, said the victim, who lodged a report yesterday, was introduced to the scheme on June 1.
He said the woman received a WhatsApp message from someone named "Selina" using the number 018-3748439.
The message contained a link to the Asia Station investment scheme, which promised returns of up to 20 per cent.
"The victim was attracted by the supposed returns and agreed to invest, making 28 transactions to six different accounts, amounting to RM555,130.29 from July 19."
Since investing, the victim only received RM20,000 in returns. She became suspicious when she was asked to pay RM300,000 to withdraw the profits from her investment.
Balveer added that "Selina" was also unreachable.
"The victim lost RM535,130.29."
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, with potential charges against the mule account holders.
"Action will be taken against the mule account owners."
Balveer advised the public against falling for online investment schemes offering substantial and easy returns.
