JOHOR BARU: Johor police have embarked on an aggressive campaign against illegal street racers across the state, adopting a total enforcement operation approach.
State police chief Commissioner M. Kumar said the state Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department's crackdown remained a key focus as they aim to detect and take firm action against "street heroes" who flout traffic regulations.
In a special operation held simultaneously across all districts in Johor over the weekend, 902 motorists and 820 vehicles were inspected, while some 660 summonses were issued for various traffic violations.
Police also detained seven motorists aged between 14 and 21 for driving and riding recklessly and dangerously.
Previously, the New Straits Times reported the Iskandar Puteri police elite Squad 42 traffic enforcement team's operation against 'Mat Rempit' resulted in two arrests, 97 motorcycles seized and 314 summonses issued, also during the weekend.
Kumar said the traffic operations will be ongoing, warning that stern action will be taken against offenders without fear or favour, in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
"Police will relentlessly pursue motorists who defy traffic laws and put other road users at risk," he said in a statement.
He also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children's activities to prevent them from getting involved in illegal street racing, which carries severe risks, including death, while motorists are advised to strictly adhere to traffic laws to avoid complications and ensure public safety and order.
