KULIM: The Department of Environment (DoE) investigated the disposal of suspected scheduled waste, believed to be latex gloves, at a factory construction site in Kulim yesterday.
Kedah DoE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the department received a complaint about the suspected scheduled waste at the site on Aug 16.
She said the waste was discovered by a consultant conducting a technical study at the site.
"Acting on the complaint, the DoE initiated an investigation and found that the waste is likely latex gloves combined with other materials.
"The estimated amount of waste is one metric tonne. The investigation and waste sampling began at 9am and concluded at 3pm yesterday," she said in a statement today.
She said the Chemistry Department has received samples for analysis.
"Further action will be taken once we receive the chemical analysis results.
"If the waste is solid (non-scheduled waste), the case will be handed over to the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park for further action and investigation.
"However, if it is found to be scheduled waste, the case will be investigated under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Amendment 2024)."
