SUNGAI BULOH: Two bike-riding teenagers died after colliding with each other while performing stunts along the Jalan Elmina Business Park here.
District police chief Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said the accident occurred at 11.20pm on Wednesday.
"Based on our investigations, the motorcyclists were involved in a head-on collision with each other while performing wheelies
"The riders, both aged 13, died at the scene," he said in a statement on Thursday.
He said based on their records, fatal accidents in Sungai Buloh due to illegal racing and speeding from January to August this year had shown a drastic increase with 11 fatalities linked to seven investigation papers opened involving motorcyclists.
"This is compared to the three fatalities involving three investigation papers opened throughout 2023. The increase is worrying," he said.
Superintendent Mohd Hafiz advised parents to control their children's activities, especially at night.
"This is necessary to curb them from participating in any illegal racing which not only threatens their lives but also that of other motorists.
"Underaged riders and their parents or guardians can be charged under Section 39 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for underaged driving and allowing others who did not have a valid licence to operate a vehicle.
"Parents can also be held liable under Section 31(1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglecting or exposing a child to danger so as to cause him or her physical or emotional injury," he said.
The community must be the eyes and ears for the authorities in putting a stop to illegal racing, he added.
