TELUK INTAN: A contractor was charged at magistrate's court here today with punching and slapping his grandmother and aunt, last Monday.
The accused, M.D, Nava Rajan, 34, however, pleaded not guilty when both charges were read before magistrate, T. Ashvinii.
According to the first charge, the man is accused of intentionally causing injury to his aunt, P. Rajaspary, 68, by punching her in the face at a house in Taman Indah Jaya, here, at 10.30pm on Aug 5.
For the second charge, he is accused of intentionally causing injury to his grandmother, R. Kamalam, 90, by slapping her in the face at the same location and time.
He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of one year or a fine of RM2,000 or both and punishable under Section 326A of the Penal Code, which allows for double the imprisonment period if convicted.
Prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Ainaa Liyana Mohd Talal proposed a bail amount of RM6,000 for both charges.
S. Kumaresan, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), requested a minimum bail amount, citing that his client is supporting two children and his parents.
The court then granted bail at RM5,000 with one surety for both charges, with an additional condition that the accused must not meet or disturb the victims until the case is resolved.
The court then set Sept 10 for mention.
