PUTRAJAYA: Bersatu's Badrul Hisham Shaharin, commonly known as Chegubard, has been remanded for two days at the magistrate's court here to assist in the investigation into allegations of corruption and bribery involving senior Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) officers.
The remand order, which started today, was granted by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin and will end tomorrow.
Chegubard's lawyer, Rafique Rashid, said the police had sought a four-day remand for his client, but the court only granted the remand for two days.
He also said his client was being remanded to assist three investigations, namely for giving false information under Section 203A of the Penal Code, wrongful communication under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972, and misuse of network facilities under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"A four-day remand was applied by the investigating officer, but after hearing arguments from both sides, the magistrate classified Badrul as an informant who should be given legal protection and cannot be subjected to criminal or civil action.
"The Magistrate then granted a two-day remand," he told reporters when met at the court today.
Badrul previously arrived at the court around 9.15am before leaving the court at 11.30am with a police escort.
Yesterday, Badrul was detained at the Putrajaya police headquarters in connection with a police probe into allegations of corruption and bribery involving senior RMN officers.
Meanwhile, Rafique said that Badrul would be released tomorrow if there were no issues and that the police can seek to extend the remand for further investigation, if required.
